It should not be surprising to anyone to learn that iTunes' inability to automatically add lyrics to songs is a "business" decision and not a technical hurdle. Music business is very complex - but essentially it comes down to 2 distinct (and often different) IP-right owners: 1) the performer (the record label) & 2) the music composers & lyrics writers (the publisher). For example, songs performed by Britney Spears (or most pop signers) are not necessary written by her. Apple has negotiated (& paid) record companies for the performance piece but they have yet to worked out the terms with the publishers - if & when they do, they will also have to increase the price of the songs. My suspicion is that Apple has not negotiated with the publishers yet in order to keep the price of the songs as low as possible.

When a song or CD is purchased - a small portion does go to the publisher but majority of their income comes from licensing of publishing rights (via sync rights & performance rights). As I said - this is a complicated business. So enjoy the free lyrics site while they last.

I think it could (and should) be a lot easier. Here's hoping Apple will provide us with a nicer solution.

seriously? SERIOUSLY?

Now where did I put Steve Jobs number, I am going give him an earful!!

That is ridiculous - I have 15000 songs x 5 seconds each = 20+ hours of pointlessness.

They must have the publisher connections to make this automagically happen like they did with album art.

grrr...
