10 Essential Portable Apps

You may not realize it, but your USB flash drive is really much more than a high-capacity floppy disk. Why? Because you can run applications from it! A great way to get started is the Portable Apps Suite which comes with a great set of programs and a cool menu for your flash drive. There are, however, lots of applications available that can be run portably. These are the cream of the crop. Read more »

The Greatest Firefox Extensions Evar! 2

I’m setting up a copy of Firefox on my USB flash drive. As a result, I’m having to re-evaluate the extensions I will be running. I think I run a pretty good set of extensions right now. I get quite a bit of use out of everything I run. Many of them are indispensable! I’m not as minimalist as some. I try a lot of extensions, but I periodically try to purge the extensions which aren’t getting much use. Here’s a list of those I’m currently running: Read more »

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished 3

So goes the sage advice of one of my coworkers. This adage was put into practice on me today. Read more »

Potty Mouth

Today I’ve been thinking about different ways to reduce my impact on the environment. I can’t put a finger on exactly what inspired me. There’s something in me which forces me to continually evaluate almost every minute aspect of my life for possible revision. I think it was the act of giving up TV which made me realize how easy it is to make these changes even though they seem like they will be unbearable until you are actually living the new way. Discovery of Drupal 1

I’m not missing or giving up on the blog. What I am doing is working on the wheresitmade site. Specifically, I am trying out a CMS called Drupal. It’s a very robust system, and I’m sure it is capable of making the site what I want it to be. The only question which remains unanswered is whether I am capable. Only time will tell.

I have a Drupal install up and running, and I’m setting up my development environment. Most of the functionality I need is in the Drupal core, but I am going to have to play a little to get everything I want. For the benefit of any other users trying or considering Drupal, I will provide the resources I have found helpful. Read more »

Another Shot at wheresitmade

You may remember the project I blogged about previously called wheresitmade. I’m giving it another lease on life this time self-hosted on the MediaWiki engine. This time there won’t be a private beta. It’s going to go live as soon as I get it ready enough. Then I’ll go back and work on refinement. I’ll post another update when you can check it out. Let’s hope it makes it this time!

$200 Laptop

I hope this laptop becomes a reality. If it does, it will probably make computers accessible to many people who could not afford them previously. I love the size. I don’t want a laptop with a 15″ monitor. I also don’t like the current trend of putting a highly reflective coating on the screen of every laptop that is manufactured. Judging from the pictures, it looks as though this monitor has the flat-finished screen I love. Keep your eyes open for this.
