Entertainment Alternatives
Many people find one of the most frightening aspects of ditching TV is what to do with all that extra free time. I have compiled a list of possibilities to give comfort to those thinking of taking the plunge.
- Books. The most obvious suggestion is books! Libraries are fantastic resources. Find one nearby. There are also alternatives for people who cannot get to a library or do not have one close by. Notable alternatives include WhatsOnMyBookshelf?, bookins, PaperBackSwap, FrugalReader, and BookCrossing. LibriVox is an option for free audiobooks. I guess you could also buy books or audiobooks, but where’s the fun in that?
- Podcasts. Podcasts are often similar in ways to either television or radio depending on whether they contain only audio or also video. One key difference is that the podcasting community can and does support an incredible diversity of ideas and programming. Whereas television is a medium with very limited access, podcasting is very cheap and accessible. I regularly view and listen to podcast on a variety including science, Linux, Gmail, videogames, and travel. You’re almost certain to find something that caters to your specific interests. I use a portal called Podcast Ready to find and subscribe to audio podcasts. If you try that one, add raddevon to your friends list. I’d love to see the podcasts you find! There are also alternatives like Podcast Pickle, PodShow, Podcast.net, and digg’s podcast section. There are a number of sites which focus exclusively on video including mefeedia, blip.tv, and FireAnt.tv. Advertising in this medium is present but very crude when compared to TV ads. This will probably change soon so enjoy it while you can!
- Make something. Almost everyone has a creative side. However, it takes a lot more effort to satisfy it than to be passively being entertained. There are lots of potential outlets. You could start your own blog or write/self-publish a book or paint something or sculpt something… I’m only scratching the surface!
- Get organized. This is something that is probably needed for a lot of people (TV fan or not!), but I think it’s easier to put off important but mundane tasks like this when there are a hundred or so different channels I could be watching instead. 30boxes is a great web-based calendar application with integrated lists (for to-do’s). That should be a start. Check the lists every couple of days to make sure you’re getting the important stuff taken care of. I have also found it rewarding to go through the rooms in my house and organize all the things in each one getting rid of things that are no longer used. It makes life a little simpler.
- Time with family. I won’t endorse taking a second job. I personally believe one should work as little as necessary. What will pay dividends in the long run, though, is time spent with family. This is especially true if you have children. They will remember the time you spent with them. It will affect your long-term relationship with them. It also works for elderly relatives. You sometimes don’t know when those opportunities won’t be there any longer. Spend some time loving and playing with pets too.
There could be a hundred more things to do. Post some in the comments!

In the make something category, I find that cooking is fun and allows you something to share when you are finished. It can also be a fun way to get the family involved, whether in the making or the eating! Also, being active if you can is fun, go to the park, ride your bike, walk, whatever….
Oh, and don’t forget to take some time and PAMPER yourself! Give yourself a facial, paint your finger-and-toenails, soak in a tub. If that stuff isn’t what you love, upload your favorite music to an mp3 player and take a hike or a run or a bike on your own! Read a book, anything, basically just ignore all the needs and desires of the world outside and focus on your own needs and desires. If you need a nap, take a break and nap your heart out! Maybe you have always wanted to do volunteer work…Take some time and do it…Even a little teeny tiny bit of time spent on yourself can do wonders for how you feel…and that in turn will be paid forward to everyone else you are in contact with!
